Question 1

A 40ft box is about $2,800-4,500 to the US West Coast and $3,200-5,200 to North Europe in mid-2026. Book 3-4 weeks early and expect surcharges on top.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: A 40ft Box Runs About $2,800-4,500 to the US West Coast and $3,200-5,200 to North Europe in Mid-2026Direct AnswerMid-2026 all-in spot rates for a 40ft container run roughly $2,800-4,500 from China to the US West Coast and $3,200-5,200 to North European base ports, with a 20ft box at about $1,800-3,500. These are forwarder rates excluding destination duties. Rates are volatile - they rose about 239% from March 2026 on tariff front-loading - so book 3-4 weeks ahead and treat any quote older than a week as indicative only. Question 2

Use LCL for 1-15 CBM, switch to FCL above ~15 CBM, and air or courier below 1 CBM. Consolidate to hit the FCL break-even.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Use LCL for 1-15 CBM, FCL Above ~15 CBM, and Air or Courier Below 1 CBMDirect AnswerThe decision is almost entirely a function of volume. LCL (Less than Container Load) charges per cubic metre and suits loads of 1-15 CBM. Once you pass roughly 12-15 CBM a full 20ft container becomes cheaper per CBM, so FCL wins. Below about 1 CBM, air or courier usually beats LCL once origin and destination CFS charges are added. Consolidating several suppliers' goods to cross the 15 CBM break-even is the single most reliable way to reach FCL pricing. The Volume Rule That Decides EverythingFreight is priced by how much space you occupy, not by what you buy. The industry break-even between sharing a container and filling your own sits at roughly 12-15 CBM, so the first question to answer is simply how many cubic metres your order actually is.12-15 CBMFCL break-evenWhere a full 20ft box beats LCL per CBM1-15 CBMLCL sweet spotPay only for the space you useAir or courierLCL CFS fees cancel the saving~28 CBM20ft capacityRough usable volume of a filled boxFCL wins once a load crosses the 12-15 CBM break-even. What LCL Costs You Beyond the RateThe per-CBM ocean rate is only the start. LCL loads pay an origin CFS (container freight station) fee to be consolidated and a destination CFS fee to be deconsolidated, plus documentation and handling on each end. On small loads these flat fees can outweigh the per-CBM saving.Cost componentTypical 2026 rangeApplies toOrigin CFS$15-40 / CBMLCL onlyDestination CFS$15-40 / CBMLCL onlyDocumentation$50-100LCL onlyBase ocean$70-180 / CBM by laneLCL onlyPer-CBM saving vs FCLErased below ~1 CBMSmall loads When FCL Clearly WinsYour order exceeds 15 CBMA full box is cheaper per CBM than buying space piecemeal, and you control the whole container. You have mixed but compatible goodsOne sealed box removes double CFS handling and halves the paperwork.Transit speed mattersFCL skips the 5-15 day consolidation window that LCL adds at both ends.Your load is under 1 CBMHere LCL's fixed fees make air or a courier parcel the cheaper route. You are shipping a few cartons to test a productLCL keeps cash free until demand is proven.LCL adds CFS handling and a 5-15 day consolidation window. The Small-Load Exception: Below 1 CBMOnce a shipment is tiny, the mathematics flips. LCL still charges a 1 CBM minimum and adds CFS fees at both ports, so a 0.3 CBM parcel can cost more by sea than by air. Air freight runs $4-9/kg and express courier $6.50-15/kg - expensive per kilo, but with no CFS overhead and a 2-7 day clock.LCL (sub-1 CBM)CFS fees dominateAir freight$4-9/kg, 5-11 daysExpress courier$6.50-15/kg, 2-7 days A Quick Decision Checklist1Measure your goods in CBMCarton volume times quantity, not the supplier's estimate.2Under 1 CBM - air or courierSkip LCL unless the product is heavy and dense.31-15 CBM - quote LCLAsk for all-in including both CFS fees.412-15 CBM+ - quote FCLCompare the full-box price per CBM against LCL.5Across several suppliers - consolidatePool into one shipment to cross the break-even.6Confirm with your forwarderLane and season move the exact crossover point.Measuring real CBM is the first step in the FCL-vs-LCL decision. Case: A Yiwu Buyer Who Crossed the Break-EvenBuyer: French homeware start-up, four District-4 suppliersThe client's four orders separately came to 3-6 CBM each - all squarely LCL, with four sets of CFS and documentation fees. We held the goods at our consolidation warehouse for nine days until all four arrived, then stuffed one 20ft container at 26 CBM.OutcomeThe consolidated FCL landed about 22% cheaper than four parallel LCL shipments would have, and cleared customs as a single entry instead of four. How RND SOURCING Handles the ChoiceOur warehouse in Yiwu exists precisely for this decision. For multi-supplier buys we hold goods free for a short window, measure the real CBM, and only then recommend LCL or a consolidated FCL - never the default that earns the biggest margin. Question 3

A golden sample is a sealed, signed, dated approved unit sent to the inspector as the reference standard. It turns subjective appearance calls into objective comparisons.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: A Sealed, Signed Unit That Defines What 'Correct' Looks Like - Without It the Inspector GuessesDirect AnswerA golden sample is a single physical unit you have approved, then sealed, signed and dated. It is the reference the inspector compares production against. Without one, appearance and finish judgements become subjective, which is where the majority of inspection disputes begin. Why Subjectivity Is the Real ProblemQuantity and dimensions are objective; someone counts or measures. Appearance is not. Whether a surface mark is a defect or an acceptable variation is a judgement, and judgement without a reference is where a factory and a buyer end up describing the same unit in opposite terms.Without a reference the inspector improvises They apply general standards that may not match your market.Colour drifts between lots Especially in textiles, coatings and moulded plastics.Factories interpret 'good' as 'sellable here' Which is not the same as sellable in your market.Disputes become unresolvable Two opinions, no evidence, and a container waiting.A golden sample is sealed, signed and dated so it cannot be revised. What Makes a Sample 'Golden'A sample only becomes a standard when it is fixed in a way neither party can quietly change. Three physical steps do that.SealedIn a tamper-evident bag or box so it cannot be swapped.Signed by both partiesYour signature and the supplier's, acknowledging the same standard.DatedSo a later sample cannot claim to be the original.Photographed from all anglesA digital record in case the physical unit is damaged. An unsealed sample sitting in the factoryNot a golden sample. It is just a product. Keep Your Own CopyThis is the step most buyers skip and the one that matters most in a dispute. Two identical sealed units, one with the inspector or factory and one with you, mean the standard cannot be quietly revised after the fact.1Approve two identical units, not oneMade in the same run, checked against each other.2Seal, sign and date both togetherSame day, same signatures, photographed side by side.3Send one, keep oneThe retained copy is your evidence if the standard is later disputed.4Store it properlyAway from light and heat, especially for anything coloured or plastic.5Replace it when the spec changesAn outdated reference generates false failures and erodes trust in the process.Approve two units - send one, keep one. How the Inspector Uses ItIn the inspection itself, the golden sample converts a series of opinions into a series of comparisons, which is what makes an AQL call defensible.CheckWithout a golden sampleWith oneColourInspector's judgement of 'close enough'Direct side-by-side comparisonSurface finishGeneral workmanship standardsMatched against an approved unitAssembly and fitAssumed from drawingsVerified against a physical buildPackagingDescribed in the specCompared to the approved presentationWeight and feelRarely assessedImmediately obvious in the hand Case: The Standard That MovedBuyer: French candle brand, third order, colour disputeThe factory produced a sample for order three that had drifted noticeably warmer than the original approval, and referred to it as the standard. Because the client had retained a sealed, dated unit from order one, the drift was demonstrable rather than arguable.OutcomeThe factory recognised the original sealed unit and corrected the batch. Without the retained copy the client's position would have been an assertion. The reference turns an appearance opinion into a comparison. Common MistakesSending it after the inspection is bookedIt needs to be with the inspector before they travel.Approving a hand-made sample as the run standardHand-built units are usually better than production; set expectations accordingly.Only one copy, held by the factoryThe standard is then whatever the factory says it is.Never updating itA stale reference fails good production and wastes inspection time. How RND SOURCING Manages Golden SamplesWe ask for two identical units at approval, seal and date both in front of the supplier, and photograph them together before one goes to the client and one stays with us. When an inspection is booked, the sealed reference reaches the inspector before they travel rather than on the day. Where a client has approved a hand-built sample we flag the gap between that and production output explicitly, because setting the standard against a hand-made unit creates a failure that is nobody's fault and everybody's problem.Set up a golden sample processRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Question 4

Agent inspection is fine for routine reorders. Use an independent firm for high-value, custom or disputable orders - independence is the whole point.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Agent Checks for Routine Reorders, Independent Firms for High-Value or Disputable OrdersDirect AnswerAn agent's in-house inspection is cheaper, faster to arrange and perfectly proportionate for low-risk repeat orders. Its structural limitation is that the inspector is paid by the agent, which creates a quiet bias toward passing. For high-value, custom or potentially disputed orders, an independent firm reporting only to you removes that. The Structural DifferenceThis is not a question about honesty. It is a question about who the inspector's incentives point towards, and that is a structural fact rather than a character judgement.DimensionAgent in-house QCIndependent firmWho pays the inspectorThe agentYouCostOften bundled or nominal$120-400 per man-daySchedulingImmediate, they are localRequires booking, often 72 hoursBias riskPassing keeps the shipment movingNo stake in the outcomeReport standing in a disputeWeak - an interested partyStrong - third-party evidenceCategory depthGeneralistSpecialist by categoryAgent QC is proportionate for routine reorders and warehouse counts. When Agent Inspection Is the Right CallA repeat order from a proven supplierWhere three or more clean runs have built genuine history.Low unit value, low riskWhere the worst case is absorbable and the freight is small.A quick pre-consolidation countReconciling quantities at the warehouse is exactly agent work.Between formal inspectionsAn informal look during production adds visibility at no real cost.A first order from a new supplierThis is where the bias risk is least acceptable. When to Insist on IndependenceThe rule of thumb is straightforward: if the outcome could end in a dispute about money, the inspector should not be paid by anyone with a stake in the shipment.First order from a new supplier No history, highest failure probability, and the report may matter later.Custom or tooled products Where a defect repeats across the whole run and liability becomes contested.High-value consignments Where the inspection fee is trivial next to the exposure.Anything safety-related Independent evidence is what stands up if a regulator or retailer asks. When you may need to withhold payment An interested party's report will not support that position.Independence matters most when the outcome could be disputed. The Honest Version of the Trade-OffAny agent telling you their in-house check is always sufficient is arguing for their own convenience. Any inspection firm telling you an agent check is worthless is selling. The workable position sits in between, and it is a routing decision made per order.1Classify the order by riskNew supplier, custom work or high value pushes towards independent.2Use agent QC for the routine layerQuantity reconciliation, packing checks and warehouse counts.3Book independent for the decision pointsPre-shipment on first runs, container loading on high-value.4Keep both reportsThey serve different purposes and cost different amounts.5Revisit as history buildsReduce checking deliberately, not by drift. Case: Where the In-House Report Would Not Have HeldBuyer: Belgian furniture importer, $54,000 order, contested defectA finish defect on roughly a quarter of the units led to a dispute over who bore the rework cost. Because the pre-shipment inspection had been run by an independent firm with a dated, photographed AQL report, the client's position was documented by a party with no interest in the answer. The factory accepted the rework.OutcomeThe $340 inspection fee produced the evidence that settled a $13,000 argument.A third-party report carries weight that an interested party's cannot. A Balanced RoutineNew supplierIndependent DPI plus independent PSI.First three ordersIndependent PSI each time, agent count at consolidation.Established supplier, standard goodsAgent QC with an independent PSI periodically.High-value or custom, alwaysIndependent PSI plus container loading supervision. How RND SOURCING Draws the LineWe run in-house checks at our own warehouse and we are direct about their limits: they are a count and a condition check by people we employ, which makes them useful and not independent. For a first order from a new supplier, anything custom, or any consignment large enough to hurt, we book an independent firm and send their report to the client unedited, including when it reflects badly on a supplier we recommended. We are not an accredited inspection body, and treating our own check as a substitute for one would not serve the client.Route inspection for my orderRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. About 22% of first shipments fail AQL and 15% of repeat-supplier shipments still show major defects. QIMA found major defects in 28% of China inspections in Q1 2026.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Roughly One in Five, and Major Defects Appear in 28% of All China InspectionsDirect AnswerInspection data across more than a thousand China factory visits in 2025 and 2026 puts first-time shipment AQL failure at about 22%, with 15% of repeat-supplier shipments still surfacing major defects. QIMA's Q1 2026 barometer found major defects in 28% of China factory inspections overall. It is more accurately a statement about manufacturing at scale, and the same variation appears in production anywhere. The question is not whether variation occurs but whether anyone looks before the container leaves.Production variation is normalMaterial lots, shift changes and tooling wear all introduce drift.Specification ambiguity causes much of itA vague spec is interpreted, and interpretation is where failures start.First runs carry the most riskThe process has not yet stabilised on your product.Repeat orders are safer but not safe15% still surface major defects, which is why checks continue.Failure at AQL means rework, not fraudMost findings are corrected by the factory before shipping.Inspection data comes from thousands of documented factory visits. We kept it. The fourth run had switched to a different resin supplier and roughly 17% of units showed surface marks absent from the approved sample. The factory had not flagged the material change.OutcomeThe lot was reworked before loading. The client now treats PSI as standing policy regardless of supplier history. Most findings end in rework at origin, not in a lost shipment. How RND SOURCING Reads the OddsWe treat a first order from any supplier as a first order, regardless of how well the sampling went, because the sample was made by hand and the run will not be. Our default on a new supplier is a during-production check plus a pre-shipment inspection, and we keep the pre-shipment check on repeat orders because the 15% figure is real and we have watched it happen. Where a client wants to reduce checking to save cost, we will say where we think that is reasonable and where we think it is not.Set up a checking routineRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Seven areas: quantity, appearance, dimensions and weight, function, labelling and barcodes, packaging, and AQL defect classification. Write it yourself and send it in advance.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Quantity, Appearance, Dimensions, Function, Labelling, Packaging and AQL ClassificationDirect AnswerA thorough pre-shipment inspection checklist covers seven areas: unit and carton quantity against the purchase order, appearance and workmanship, dimensions and weight against the approved specification, functional testing of every feature, labelling and barcodes, inner and outer packaging, and defect classification under an agreed AQL standard. The Seven Areas in OrderEach area targets a distinct failure mode. Write the Checklist YourselfThis is the single highest-leverage habit in quality control and almost nobody does it. Why Inspection Level Is a Real DecisionLevel I costs less because it samples less, and the reduction in catch probability is not marginal. On a 1,000-unit order, Level I pulls 20 samples against Level II's 80, and the chance of catching a defective batch falls from 98% to 64%.Level I on anything safety-related A one-in-three chance of missing a bad batch is not a risk profile, it is a gamble.Level I on a new supplier You have no history to justify reducing the sample.Documented cost of under-sampling Level I on electronics has an average failure cost near $22,000.Level II as the sensible default Reduce it only with a supplier whose record actually earns the reduction. Case: The Feature Nobody TestedBuyer: Dutch outdoor-gear seller, 3,200 rechargeable lampsThe generic checklist tested power-on and brightness. It did not test the waterproof seal, because the client had not listed it. Roughly 8% of units leaked in the first month of sale. The revised checklist for the next order specified an immersion test with a stated duration and depth.OutcomeThe second production run passed with two minor findings; the leak defect did not recur.Labelling and barcode checks catch market-specific failures early. The Golden Sample's Role in the ChecklistA checklist tells the inspector what to look at. A golden sample tells them what 'correct' looks like. Neither works properly without the other.Send a sealed, signed, dated unitThe physical reference against which appearance is judged.Keep an identical copy yourselfSo a later 'improved' sample cannot redefine the standard.Reference it in the checklistExplicitly, so appearance findings cite the sample.Update it when the spec changesAn outdated reference causes false failures. How RND SOURCING Builds a ChecklistWe start from the client's own complaint and return history rather than a template, because that is where the real defect list lives. Tolerances go in as numbers, market-specific labelling requirements are written out, and the AQL level is set deliberately rather than defaulted. The checklist and the sealed golden sample reach the inspector before the booking is confirmed. For products with a safety-critical feature we push clients towards Level II sampling even when Level I is cheaper, and we say plainly that we are not a testing laboratory.Build a PSI checklist with usRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Question 7

Check category experience, coverage and travel terms, the depth of a sample report, and references. Turnaround should be 24-48 hours. Cheapest is rarely the right filter.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Match the Category Experience, Confirm Coverage and Travel, and Read a Sample ReportDirect AnswerFour checks separate a competent inspection provider from a cheap one: relevant experience in your product category, confirmed coverage of your factory's city with travel terms stated, a sample report deep enough to judge, and reachable references. CLS puts an inspector at the loading. They verify carton count, confirm the right goods, check the container and record the seal - preventing short-shipment and substitution.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: An Inspector Present While Your Goods Are Loaded and the Container Is SealedDirect AnswerContainer loading supervision places an inspector at the factory or warehouse during stuffing. They verify carton count against the packing list, confirm the correct products are going in, check the container's condition, supervise the stuffing pattern and record the seal number. It closes the gap between a passed inspection and a departed container. The Gap CLS Exists to CloseA pre-shipment inspection certifies goods that were sitting in a warehouse on a particular day. Between that moment and the container sealing there is a window, and two specific frauds live inside it.Short-shipment Fewer cartons loaded than paid for. Discovered on arrival, when leverage has already gone.Substitution after inspection Inspected goods swapped for lower-grade stock once the inspector has left.Damage from bad stuffing Poor load patterns crush cartons in transit; the damage looks like carrier handling.A container that should not be used Holes, damp, or contamination inside a unit nobody examined before loading.CLS puts an observer at the last point where goods can change. What the Inspector Actually Does1Counts cartons against the packing listThe single most valuable function, and the one that stops short-shipment.2Verifies product identity by samplingConfirms what is in the cartons matches what passed inspection.3Inspects the empty container firstCleanliness, watertightness, structural condition, odour.4Supervises the stuffing patternLoad distribution, dunnage and bracing so cargo survives transit.5Records and photographs the sealSeal number tied to the shipment documents, closing the chain of custody. When CLS Earns Its FeeHigh-value consignmentsWhere a short-shipment of even a few cartons is material.A first shipment from a new supplierNo history means no basis to assume the loading will be clean.Full container loadsMore cartons, more room for a discrepancy to hide.Goods loaded away from the factoryAn extra handling point is an extra risk point.A small LCL consignment from a trusted supplierOften proportionate to skip, though the packing list should still be reconciled. The carton count against the packing list is the core function. CLS Alongside the Other CheckpointsThe three inspection types answer different questions at different moments. Together they cover the production timeline end to end.CheckpointTimingQuestion it answersDuring-production (DPI)15-30% completeIs the process producing the right thing?Pre-shipment (PSI)80%+ packed, not containerisedAre the finished goods acceptable?Container loading (CLS)At stuffingDid the goods that passed actually get loaded? Case: Fourteen Cartons That Never BoardedBuyer: Spanish toy importer, 620 cartons across two SKUsPSI passed cleanly. During loading supervision the inspector's count came to 606 cartons against a packing list of 620. The factory attributed it to a warehouse miscount, produced the missing fourteen within two hours and the container sealed at the correct number.OutcomeWithout an observer at the loading, the shortfall would have surfaced at destination, after payment and with no practical remedy. The recorded seal number closes the chain of custody. What to Require in the CLS ReportPhotographs of the empty containerInterior condition before anything is loaded.Carton count evidencePhotographic record of the count, not just a stated figure.Loading sequence imagesEnough frames to show the stuffing pattern.Sealed door and seal numberThe closing photograph that ties the seal to the shipment. How RND SOURCING Handles LoadingWhen goods consolidate at our own Yiwu warehouse we supervise the loading ourselves as a matter of course, and the client receives the photographic set including the sealed door and seal number. Where the container is stuffed at a factory we do not control, we recommend booking independent supervision, because an observer paid by the party doing the loading is not really an observer. For high-value consignments we treat CLS as standard rather than optional.Ask about loading supervisionRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Written by our sourcing desk from first-hand market work. Question 9

Yes for new suppliers and custom products. DPI at 15-30% completion catches repeatable faults while they are still cheap to fix. Pair it with a final PSI on important orders.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Yes for New Suppliers and Custom Products - Catching a Fault at 15% Beats Finding It at 100%Direct AnswerA during-production inspection runs when roughly 15-30% of the order is complete. Its entire value is timing: a wrong material, a tooling error or a specification misread costs almost nothing to correct at that point, and can mean scrapping the whole run if it surfaces at pre-shipment instead. What DPI Catches That PSI CannotA pre-shipment inspection tells you whether finished goods are acceptable. A during-production inspection tells you whether the process is going to produce acceptable goods, which is a different and much cheaper question to answer.Fault typeCaught at DPICaught at PSIWrong material gradeChange the material, minimal lossScrap the entire runTooling or mould errorCorrect the tool before volumeEvery unit carries the defectSpecification misreadClarify and restart cheaplyRework or rejectColour or finish driftAdjust the processSort and rework by handAssembly sequence faultRetrain the lineDisassemble and rebuildDPI checks the process while faults are still cheap to correct. The Numbers Behind the RecommendationThis is not a theoretical preference. Case: A Tooling Fault Caught at 18%Buyer: US kitchen-gadget brand, 12,000 units, custom mouldThe DPI at roughly 18% completion found consistent mould flash along one seam on every unit sampled - a tooling defect, not a workmanship issue. The factory reworked the mould over four days and reran the affected units. At PSI the same fault would have meant 12,000 defective pieces with no cheap remedy.OutcomeA $198 inspection prevented a full-run scrap the client's own estimate put near $26,000. How RND SOURCING Schedules DPIWe push for a during-production check on every first order with a new supplier and on anything involving custom tooling, because that is where the money is. Our desk confirms the true production start with the factory rather than accepting the reported date, so the inspection lands in the right window. Findings come back to the client with photographs and an agreed corrective-action deadline before production continues. Question 10

Expect $120-400 per man-day, with a typical single-order PSI at $250-450. Travel and rush fees are extra. Most orders need one man-day.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: About $120-400 per Man-Day, With a Typical Pre-Shipment Inspection at $250-450Direct AnswerThird-party inspection in China is priced per inspector day. Specialist firms sit around $120-199, while SGS, Bureau Veritas and Intertek occupy the top of the $120-400 range. A standard pre-shipment inspection on one order is usually a single man-day, landing most PSIs between $250 and $450 all-in. What You Are Actually Paying ForInspection is priced by inspector time, not by order value. Case: A $300 Check Against a $19,000 ContainerBuyer: German homeware importer, 6,400 unitsThe client debated skipping the PSI on a repeat supplier to save roughly $300. We booked it anyway. The inspector found a glaze variance across two production lots affecting about 30% of units - well past the AQL 2.5 threshold - and the factory reworked before loading.OutcomeRework cost the factory nine days. Shipping the lot would have cost the client an estimated $19,000 in returns and marketplace ratings damage.A competent provider returns the report within 24 to 48 hours. How RND SOURCING Handles Inspection CostOur desk books third-party inspections on the client's behalf and passes the provider's invoice through at cost with a stated coordination fee, rather than folding it into a margin. For routine reorders from suppliers we already know, an in-house check at our warehouse is usually proportionate and much cheaper. Question 11

Alibaba scam suppliers show recognisable combinations: deeply under-priced quotes, refusal of video calls or third-party inspection, off-platform payment pressure, bank-account names that do not match the company, residential addresses and reused stock photographs. Any single flag is a question; two or more in combination is a stop.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Watch for Two or More - Any One Is Just a ConversationDirect AnswerTop signals: a price 40%+ below every competitor, refusal of a live video call or independent inspection, pressure to pay 100% upfront through Western Union or a personal account, a bank-account name that differs from the company, a residential address and reused stock photos. Two or more of these together is a stop sign. Why Scam Suppliers Are Easy to Spot in Aggregate and Hard in IsolationAlmost every scam supplier can clear at least one of the routine checks. Their business licence is real, their Gold Supplier badge is paid up and their catalogue is full of attractive product photography. The pattern becomes visible only when you stack two or three signals together: a price well below the market plus a refusal to accept independent inspection plus pressure to pay off-platform is not a slow supplier, it is a scam. The list below is the combination we have seen most often at RND SOURCING. Read it as a stack of indicators rather than a checklist of hard rules.Red flags are signals in combination, not pass-or-fail rules in isolation. The Twelve Highest-Signal Red FlagsPrice 40%+ below every other quote. In a transparent commodity market, an outlier low price is almost always a specification difference, a substitution plan or a fiction. Ask for a written breakdown of the unit cost.Refusal of a live video factory tour. The market runs 365 days a year. There is no scheduling excuse for a refusal. Pre-recorded videos are not a substitute.Refusal of independent third-party inspection.Blocking a neutral inspector is the most informative refusal you will get. The result must be inconvenient for them.Pressure to pay 100% upfront.Standard safe terms are 30% deposit, balance after inspection. Anything else transfers all your risk onto you.Beneficiary name differs from the business licence.Account mismatches appear in roughly 22% of flagged suppliers. Treat this as a stop signal even if an explanation is offered.Address maps to a residential apartment.Baidu Maps or Google Maps will show it in seconds. Real factories sit in industrial parks.Stock or stolen factory photos.Reverse image search any factory photograph. Re-used stock imagery is one of the highest-signal scam tells.Reluctance to provide a business licence. There is no legitimate reason a registered company cannot send a stamped licence image within twenty-four hours.Brand-new account with clustered reviews.Genuine suppliers accumulate reviews over years. A six-month account with forty reviews posted in two weeks has been curated.Urgency pressure on the order.Limited-stock offers, factory-closing discounts and tomorrow-only pricing are not how Chinese suppliers normally negotiate.Off-platform payment via Western Union, crypto or personal PayPal.Alibaba Trade Assurance is the platform's escrow for a reason. Off-platform payment removes every protection you have.Welcomes direct payment, factory contact and independent audit. This is the only counter-indicator worth mentioning. A supplier who is comfortable with all of these is statistically low risk. The Three Scam Patterns That Recur Most OftenThree combinations appear over and over. Each one is recoverable if you catch it before the deposit, and un-recoverable after. Pattern A - phantom factoryPolished Alibaba listing with a real-looking factory videoStock photos stolen from another supplier's websiteListed address is a serviced officeSub-contracts every real order to a different anonymous workshopAn independent audit catches it before any money moves Pattern B - substitution fraudLow quote wins the orderSample made with the right materialsBulk production runs with cheaper substitutesInspection is blocked or moved to after packingPre-shipment inspection on an unopened production run stops it Pattern C - ghost after depositAggressive pressure for full prepaymentOff-platform payment via personal accountCommunication drops after the deposit landsTrade Assurance or escrow was refusedStaged payments and Trade Assurance stop this pattern entirelyThe substitution-fraud pattern is often caught only by inspecting the actual bulk run. Case: The Quote That Was Too GoodFrom the RND SOURCING desk, YiwuA buyer had been negotiating a small household appliance for two months with an English-speaking supplier. The price sat at roughly 38% below the average of four competing quotes. The supplier produced a clean business licence, a Gold Supplier badge and an unusually accommodating payment plan of 50/50.Two flags stood out. First, the bank account name was different from the licence company name by a single character. Second, the supplier refused third-party inspection on the basis that 'our factory does not allow external visitors' - an unusual statement from a manufacturer claiming ten years of export experience. We recommended the buyer not to proceed. Three weeks later we saw the same factory photos, the same address and the same bank account on a second Alibaba listing, this time selling a different product category.OutcomeThe buyer's two flags - the account mismatch and the inspection refusal - were the entire early-warning system. The lesson is not that any single flag is fatal but that two flags in combination rarely are coincidence. The 2026 Fraud Numbers Behind These Patterns~12%Share of new platform supplier listings that are scams or traders posing as factories2026 supplier verification research+35%Reported supplier fraud growth year-on-year2026 trade intelligence reports22%Flagged suppliers showing an invoice or bank-account name mismatch2026 supplier due-diligence dataset$5,000-$100,000+Reported losses per new e-commerce seller to sourcing scamsAnnual loss range, 2026 sourcing fraud surveysAn empty alley is the wrong metaphor for a busy factory. The supplier's refusal of a video walk tells you which one is real. The Two Habits That Cut Scam Risk the MostThe patterns above are mostly detectable in advance. The two habits that move the dial most, in our experience, are not exotic. They are simply applied consistently. The first is to keep payments staged. A 30/70 split with inspection before the balance leaves your account collapses most scam patterns by removing the payoff. The second is to keep third-party inspection as a right you exercise even if you do not always need to. The willingness to do so is what separates low-risk suppliers from the rest. How RND SOURCING Filters Scam Suppliers OutOur default is to assume every new supplier is a scam until the verification stack clears them. The cost of running that stack is roughly one afternoon per supplier. The cost of not running it shows up in the figures above. We allow buyers to book their own independent inspection without telling us the date. We do not insist on being the only channel of communication. We disclose the bank account name before any deposit moves and we flag a mismatch the moment we see one. None of this is novel. Most of it is simply not negotiable inside our own network. If a supplier walks away because we asked for any of these, that walk-away is itself the information we needed.Send us a supplier link for a free verification passRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Question 12

Landed cost = product + agent + freight + duty + fees (MPF/HMF/broker/last-mile). In 2026 model ~35% effective US duty and add a 10-15% buffer.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Stack Product + Agent + Freight + Duty + Fees, Then Add 10-15% BufferDirect AnswerTotal landed cost is the full price of goods delivered to your door: product value, agent commission, international freight, import duty and the many small fees (MPF, HMF, broker, last-mile). In 2026 the biggest new variable is US tariff stacking, where typical consumer goods now face about 35% effective duty after the de-minimis removal, so always model duty before you price. Question 13

EXW = you handle all transport from the factory; FOB = seller loads at port (best balance); CIF = seller pays freight to your port (simple but pricier). Most importers choose FOB.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: EXW Is Cheapest but Most Work; FOB Is the Balanced Default; CIF Adds Freight RiskDirect AnswerEXW (ex-works) means you collect goods at the factory gate, so you control everything after but arrange all transport yourself. FOB (free on board) means the seller delivers goods loaded onto the ship at the Chinese port, the standard choice for control and cost. CIF (cost, insurance, freight) means the seller pays ocean freight and insurance to your port, simpler but usually more expensive and harder to insure separately. The Three Incoterms in Plain EnglishThese are Incoterms, the standard who-pays-for-what rules in international trade. The CIF Insurance TrapSeller chooses the insurer You may not be the named insured, complicating claims.Freight markup built in CIF often hides a 10-30% spread on ocean rates.Hard to compare carriers You cannot shop freight if the seller books it. Case: FOB Saved the TimelineImporter: US furniture seller, 2x 40ftA CIF quote looked simpler but the seller's carrier had a 3-week wait. Question 14

Every legal Chinese company carries an 18-digit Unified Social Credit Code on its business licence. Look up the exact Chinese company name on gsxt.gov.cn (free, no registration) and confirm status is active, address matches the factory and the business scope covers your product category. Mismatches are decision-grade information.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Pull the Licence, Look Up the CodeDirect AnswerAsk for the licence (营业执照) image with the 18-digit Unified Social Credit Code. Search the exact Chinese company name on gsxt.gov.cn. Confirm status reads active, the registered address matches the claimed factory location and the business scope includes your product category. Any mismatch is a problem. What a Business Licence Actually ContainsThe document a Chinese supplier calls a business licence (营业执照) is the official registration certificate issued by the local Administration for Market Regulation. Every legal entity in China holds one, including sole proprietorships, partnerships and limited companies. The full registration is also held centrally by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), and that central copy is what you are about to access. What you should see on a clean licence image: the company name in simplified Chinese, the 18-digit Unified Social Credit Code, the legal representative, the registered capital, the company address, the date of establishment, the business scope, and a stamp from the issuing authority. The document we verify, and the document the supplier volunteers, are usually the same image. How to Verify the Licence in Seven Minutes1Request a stamped copy of the business licence.Insist on the original scan with the red issuing-authority stamp. Screenshots from the supplier's own catalogue are not the same document.2Open the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System. The site gsxt.gov.cn is run by SAMR. It is free, needs no registration and covers more than 180 million active entities.3Search by the exact Chinese company name.Pinyin variants and loose translations will not match. Copy the Chinese characters off the licence image and paste them in.4Confirm the company status reads active. An active status displays as 存续. A revoked status (吊销) or a cancelled status (注销) means the entity is no longer operating. Walk away.5Cross-check the registered address and legal representative. Both should match the licence image and the salesperson's own statement. A mismatch usually means the supplier is hiding something.6Verify the business scope covers your product. If the licence says import-export of textiles and you are buying electronics, that is a yellow flag, not an automatic stop, but it warrants a direct question.7Look at administrative penalties and anomalies. The same registry shows recent regulatory penalties, abnormal operating flags and the listed shareholders. Read them. A long clean record is a useful signal. What Other Free Lookups Add to the PictureThe national registry is the single most useful check, but it is not the only one. Together with the business licence, four more free lookups give you a fuller picture of the company you are about to pay.SourceWhat it showsWhy it mattersgsxt.gov.cnNational enterprise registry, status, address, scope, penaltiesConfirms the entity is real, active and matches the licenceTax credit rating (State Taxation Administration)Grade A to D on tax complianceAlmost no overseas buyer asks for this, which is why it remains a differentiatorwenshu.court.gov.cnCourt judgments and dishonest-debtor listShows whether the company has been a losing defendant in commercial casesTianyancha / QichachaShareholders, related companies, lawsuits, news mentionsA combined view of the corporate group, useful when a single holding entity is just one of severalBaidu Maps / Google MapsSatellite and street view of the registered addressConfirms the address is an industrial park, not a residential apartmentAll five are free and require no Chinese bank account. Translators handle any Chinese-only fields.A stamped licence from the issuing authority is what to ask for, not a screenshot. Case: The Right City, Wrong AddressFrom the RND SOURCING desk, YiwuA buyer found a 'Yiwu factory' on Alibaba with a clean business licence, a Gold Supplier badge and a polished catalogue. The licence was in our hands within minutes and the SAMR lookup confirmed an active status. Then we opened Baidu Maps at the registered address. The pin landed in the middle of a residential block in a different district of the same city, surrounded by apartment buildings and a primary school. No factory floor, no workshop, no industrial zoning. A phone call to the listed legal representative produced a long silence followed by a busy signal. We had caught it before any money moved. The cost to the buyer was twenty minutes of verification work, no deposit lost.OutcomeWe now treat the Baidu Maps cross-check as mandatory for every new factory regardless of how convincing the licence looks on the registry. A clean registration on gsxt.gov.cn and an apartment address are not contradictory in China, but they are informative together. Status Codes Worth MemorisingYou do not need to learn Chinese. You do need to recognise the four status values that determine whether a company is a viable counterpart.StatusReadingWhat it meansDecision存续cunxuActive and operatingProceed to the next verification step吊销diaoxiaoLicence revoked by the regulatorWalk away注销zhuxiaoCancelled and deregisteredWalk away迁出qianchuRelocated to another jurisdictionAsk where, and re-verify in the new jurisdictionA revoked or cancelled status is final. A relocated status is recoverable with a fresh lookup.gsxt.gov.cn is free, needs no registration and is the highest-signal lookup you will do. Limits You Should Expect From a Licence CheckThe licence is current, the company is shaky. An active status does not imply financial health. Cross-check the court records and the tax credit rating separately. The registry lags behind reality. A penalty decided in court last month may not appear in the public listing for several weeks. Repeat the check on large orders.Chinese interface only. Use a translation tool or a Chinese-speaking contact. The site is not available in English at the time of writing.Trading companies are legal, not fraudulent. A company registered as a trading business that sells you a product is doing exactly what its licence allows. That does not make it the right counterpart for a factory-direct order. How RND SOURCING Treats Licence ChecksEvery supplier in our network has been through this check in the last twelve months, and most have been through it within the last six. We share the licence image, the SAMR status screenshot and the Baidu Maps cross-check with any buyer who asks for them, in the same conversation as the quotation. We also state the boundary clearly. Question 15

Verifying a real factory takes four separate checks: licence lookup on the national registry, a live video tour of a working production floor, a pre-production sample on production tooling, and a third-party audit above $10,000. Genuine manufacturers welcome all four; trading companies deflect them.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Run Four Verifications, Not OneDirect AnswerVerify the business licence on the national registry, request a live video tour of a working production floor, order a pre-production sample made on production tooling, and for orders above roughly $10,000 commission a third-party audit. A real factory welcomes all four; a trading company deflects them. Why a Single Check Is Never EnoughThere is no shortcut to confirming a Chinese supplier actually manufactures your product. The platforms where you find them have no real incentive to police factory-versus-trader claims, and the documents a supplier volunteers are exactly the documents they want you to see. So the question is not whether to verify but how many independent signals you are willing to gather before sending a deposit. The four checks below each rule out a different deception. None of them is enough alone. Together they collapse most of the impersonation scenarios that catch out first-time importers.A real factory has machines, workers and an industrial park address you can verify on a map. The Four Checks That Actually Catch ImpostorsWe walk every new factory relationship through the same four steps at RND SOURCING, regardless of how polished the supplier's English website looks. The order matters: documentation first, visual second, sample third, audit fourth, because each step is more expensive than the one before it.1Pull the business licence and verify it on gsxt.gov.cn.Get the 营业执照 image with the 18-digit Unified Social Credit Code. Look up the exact Chinese company name on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System. Confirm the registered address, business scope covers your category, and status reads active.2Request a live WeChat video tour of the production floor.Ask the salesperson to walk the shop floor with the camera on, showing machines running, workers in position, and a product resembling yours being made. Pre-recorded factory videos and stock photos are not substitutes for a real-time walk.3Order a pre-production sample made on production tooling.A hand-finished mock-up proves nothing. Insist on a sample made from the same machines and moulds that will be used for the bulk run. The sample is also the moment your written specification gets stress-tested against what the line actually produces.4For orders above roughly $10,000, commission a third-party audit.SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek or QIMA will send an auditor to the registered address and verify production capacity, workforce, machinery and quality system. Costs typically run $169-500 per man-day. What a Real Factory Actually Lets You SeeAn authentic factory does not hide. They give you an address that maps to an industrial park. Their name is on the wall of the workshop. The same worker who picked up your video call last month is the one packing the order this month. Their tool room has duplicates of the machine that produced your sample. Their QC bench has a stack of inspection records in Chinese.~70%Share of Yiwu booths operated by trading companies rather than manufacturersMarket composition observed across all five Yiwu districts70-95%Range of Alibaba listings claiming to be factories that are notImporter community estimates vary by product category$169-500Typical per-man-day cost of a third-party factory auditSGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, QIMA 2026 rates5+Independent signals you want before the first depositLicence + video + sample + audit + referenceVerification effort figures last reviewed 2026-08-03. Case: The Factory That Was a Four-Desk OfficeFrom the RND SOURCING desk, YiwuA buyer needed a small electronic accessory, found a polished Alibaba listing in Shenzhen, and asked us to do a routine third-party audit. The supplier's business licence had looked clean on the national registry. The trade assurance badge was paid up. The English sales engineer answered emails within hours. The auditor arrived at the registered address at the appointed time and found a serviced office on the ninth floor of a commercial tower. Four desks, one printer, no goods. The supplier had sub-contracted the entire order to two different factories without telling the buyer, and was marking up both ends.OutcomeThe deposit had not yet been released, so we recovered it through the agent route. The buyer learned the lesson that an English email response is one of the weakest signals in the verification stack, and we added video factory tours to our default onboarding for every new electronic supplier. The Five Red Flags a Factory Check Should CatchStock or stolen factory photos. A reverse image search on any factory photograph takes ten seconds. Re-used stock imagery is one of the highest-signal impostor tells.Catalogue that spans ten unrelated categories. A factory that makes power banks and yoga mats and stainless steel kitchenware is almost always a trading company. Real factories specialise.Owner or salesperson cannot answer a process question. Ask how a particular component is welded, sewn or assembled. The factory owner answers in a sentence. The middleman punts the question back to the factory later.Refusal to accept direct payment. Real factories will let you pay them and let the agent take a separate fee. A disguised trader insists everything goes through their own account.Address on an apartment building. Baidu Maps or Google Maps confirms in seconds. An industrial park is good. A residential tower is not.A genuine manufacturer agrees to sign-back the audit scope and a direct-payment option. Honest Limits of This ProcessA clean audit is a moment in time. Factories change hands, change tooling and change staff. Repeat the audit at meaningful order intervals, not just once.Audit quality varies. Choose an accredited firm and a defined audit scope. A walk-through inspection is not the same as a social-compliance audit.Video tours can be staged. Look for cumulative details: does the same machine appear across three calls? Are workers the same people? Is the clock on the wall moving?None of this replaces a written specification and inspection. Verification confirms who you are dealing with. A specification and inspection confirm what they are actually making for you. How RND SOURCING Verifies SuppliersWe work from Yiwu, which is within driving distance of several thousand manufacturers in Zhejiang and the Yangtze River Delta. That makes the live video walk a low-cost default rather than an exceptional ask. We keep a list of factories we have personally visited within the past twelve months and we run a fresh video tour on every new supplier before any buyer deposit moves. We are not an accredited testing laboratory and we do not issue audit certificates. We coordinate independent auditors when the order size justifies it. The verification chain ends at the third-party firm, not at us, and our role is to choose which factory to put in front of them.If any factory refuses a video tour, an audit or a direct-payment option, that refusal is the most useful signal you will get.Ask us which factories we are working with this monthRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Question 16

Plan $600-1,200 for a 3-4 day Yiwu trip (rail, hotel, food, local help), not counting flights or freight. The market is free to enter.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Budget $600-1,200 for 3-4 Days, Excluding Flights and Air FreightDirect AnswerA practical Yiwu market trip for 3-4 days runs about $600-1,200 per person, excluding international flights and the cost of shipping goods home. That covers high-speed rail from Shanghai ($14-21), a hotel ($28-70/night), local food and transport, and a local agent or translator if you use one ($80-150/day). The market itself is free to walk. When to Skip the TripIf your order is small or you have a trusted agent, a market trip may not pay back. Many buyers do one qualifying trip, then let the agent handle reorders and send samples. Question 17

Get factory-direct quotes by requesting EXW pricing, verifying the licence on GSXT (gsxt.gov.cn), and demanding production photos or a live video call of the workshop.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Ask for EXW, Verify the Licence, and Request Production EvidenceDirect AnswerTo escape the trading-company mark-up, ask for an EXW (ex-works) price, verify the supplier's business licence on the official GSXT registry, and request production photos or a live video call of the actual workshop. A trading company will resist all three; a real factory will provide them without hesitation. Why Traders Quote Like FactoriesAbout 70% of Yiwu booths are trading companies. They list 'factory price' because they buy from a factory and resell, so their quote already carries a margin you never see. Image-search the item on 1688, check the licence scope on GSXT, insist on a live factory video, and ask to pay the maker directly. Resistance to any of these identifies a trader.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Reverse-Search the Item on 1688, Verify the Licence Scope, and Ask to Pay the Factory DirectlyDirect AnswerFour moves usually settle it: image-search the product on 1688 to find who else sells it, request the Chinese business licence and check its registered scope on GSXT, demand a live video walk of the production floor, and ask to pay the factory directly with a separate fee to the intermediary. A trading company will resist at least one. Why the Listing Rarely Tells YouRoughly 70% of the booths in Yiwu are trading companies, and the proportion on export platforms is not materially better. Move Three: Insist on a Live WalkA recorded video proves nothing; footage circulates between traders. A live call where you direct what the camera looks at is the check that is hardest to fake and the one most often refused.Ask them to walk to the line making your product Not a general tour. Your item, on the machine, today.Request the raw-material store and the QC bench Both are difficult to stage convincingly at short notice.Ask an unscripted question mid-call Cycle time, defect rate, shift pattern. A trader will need to check.Treat refusal as the answer Refusing a live video call is among the strongest single red flags in supplier vetting. Move Four: Offer to Restructure the PaymentThis is the cleanest test available and it is not hostile. Offer to pay the factory directly for the goods and pay the intermediary a stated fee for their service. Case: Four Moves, One AfternoonBuyer: UK garden-products importer, $31,000 order pendingImage search found the identical item on 1688 at 34% below the quote. The Alibaba supplier's GSXT record showed a wholesale and import-export scope with no manufacturing. On the live call they showed a warehouse rather than a line, and when offered direct payment to the producer they declined to name it.OutcomeWe traced the manufacturer through the 1688 listing, verified an active licence with manufacturing scope, and placed the order at 27% below the original quote. How RND SOURCING Traces a ProducerThis is routine work for our desk rather than an exception. We run the image search, pull the GSXT record for licence status, scope, capital and registration date, and search the court and dishonest-debtor records before recommending anyone. Where the producer is within reach of Yiwu we drive out and look at the line ourselves; where it is not, we run the live call and direct the camera. 1688 shows true domestic factory prices; Alibaba adds a 10-30% export premium and traders add ~20% more. A Yiwu agent lets you buy 1688 prices with export handling.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: 1688 Is the Domestic Wholesale Market; Alibaba Adds an Export PremiumDirect Answer1688.com is China's domestic B2B wholesale platform where factories and traders list local-currency prices with no export overhead. Alibaba.com is the export-facing version, priced in USD with Trade Assurance, English support and higher MOQs. Because of that export layer, Alibaba typically runs 10-30% above the equivalent 1688 price, and buying through a trader can add a further ~20% mark-up. Two Platforms, Two Audiences1688 is built for Chinese domestic buyers: RMB pricing, local logistics, no English. Question 20

Real add-on fees (inspection, consolidation, wire, repack) are normal and legitimate. They become a problem only when buried in freight or sprung after deposit.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: The Fees Exist, but They Should Never Be HiddenDirect AnswerLegitimate sourcing work has real costs: inspection, consolidation, repacking, documentation and international wires. None of these are 'hidden' by an honest agent, they are listed as fixed line items. The problem arises when an agent folds them into an opaque margin or reveals them only after you have paid a deposit. The Fees That Are Genuinely RealThese costs reflect actual work and should appear on every professional quote. Paying them is not being 'scammed', it is paying for service.FeeTypical 2026 rangeWhy it existsConsolidation$80-150 / shipmentMerging goods from many factories3rd-party inspection$250-450Independent PSI man-dayInternational wire$20-50 / T/TYour bank's chargeRepack / FBA prep$0.2-1.0 / unitRetail-ready handlingCustoms broker$50-150Formal entry, post de-minimisLegitimate add-on fees should appear as clear line items. The De-Minimis Effect on 2026 FeesSince the $800 de-minimis exemption ended globally on 24 Feb 2026, every parcel needs formal entry. That introduced brokerage ($50-150) and ISF filing that simply did not exist for small shipments before. Case: The $90 That Became $900Importer: AU beauty buyer, 3 small parcels/moAn agent quoted 'no extra fees' but added a flat $300 'customs handling' to each of three monthly parcels. The actual brokerage was $90 each. How RND SOURCING Handles FeesEvery fixed fee appears as its own line before you pay a deposit, and freight is attached with the carrier's invoice so the margin is zero. Question 21

Yes. Expect 5-15% off standard items at volume and 10-30% on custom or large orders. Negotiate tiers, terms and packaging alongside the unit price.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Yes - Expect 5-15% on Standard Items and 10-30% on Custom or Large OrdersDirect AnswerAlibaba quotes are opening positions almost without exception. For standard catalogue items at a reasonable quantity, 5-15% off the first number is a normal outcome. For custom work or larger volumes where the factory gains real efficiency, 10-30% is achievable. Negotiate the whole package, not only the unit price. Why the First Quote Is Never the PriceA first quote is calibrated to an unknown buyer with unknown volume and unknown seriousness. How RND SOURCING NegotiatesOur desk negotiates in Mandarin daily, which changes both the price and the tone. Before any conversation we hold three to five comparable quotes plus a 1688 benchmark, so the target we name is grounded rather than hopeful. We negotiate terms and packaging alongside the unit price because that is frequently where the larger saving sits, and we tell clients when a quote is already fair. We do not take a share of the saving, so there is no incentive to push a supplier to a price that will be recovered in material quality.Let us negotiate a quoteRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Typical 2026 commission is 3-10% of goods value; 5-8% is the Yiwu norm for small buyers. Very low rates often hide margin in shipping.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Expect 3-10%, With Most Yiwu Agents Quoting 5-8%Direct AnswerIn 2026 the typical China sourcing agent commission sits between 3% and 10% of product value. Most Yiwu-based agents quote 5-8% for general consumer goods, with the lower end reserved for higher monthly volumes. Rates below 3% usually mean the agent is recovering margin elsewhere, most often in freight. The 2026 Commission Band in PracticeCommission is quoted on the factory price of goods. Question 23

Publish clear, factual FAQ and product content in plain HTML, add FAQ/Product schema, earn authoritative backlinks, and answer the exact questions buyers ask. AI engines cite structured, trustworthy pages.

Accepted Answer

Direct AnswerDirect AnswerTo be recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode in 2026, publish clear, factual content in plain HTML (not locked in images or JavaScript), add FAQ and Product schema, earn authoritative backlinks, and answer the exact questions buyers type. AI engines cite pages they can parse and trust — structured, accurate, and well-linked wins. RND SOURCING publishes source-worthy Yiwu sourcing content built for exactly this. Detailed Explanation: Why AI Engines Cite Some PagesAI search does not hand back a list of ten blue links — it synthesizes one answer and names the sources it trusts. Getting named means becoming a source the model can read, parse, and believe. That comes down to four things working together.First, the content must be machine-readable: plain HTML with the answer stated up front, not buried in an image or a JavaScript popup. Second, schema markup tells the engine precisely what each block is. Third, third-party mentions (backlinks, directories, press) signal authority. Fourth, the page must answer the real question a buyer actually asks, in plain language.Plain, crawlable HTML Lead with the answer in text; never hide key facts inside images or JS.Structured data FAQPage and Product schema make answers directly parseable by AI.Authoritative backlinks Citations from trusted sites raise the odds an AI names you.Exact-question answers Match the phrasing buyers actually type into ChatGPT or AI Mode.AI engines cite pages they can parse and trust: plain HTML plus schema. Real-World Example: From Invisible to CitedCase study — RND SOURCING AEO content, YiwuRND SOURCING rebuilt its Yiwu sourcing guidance as a set of plain-HTML FAQ and product pages with FAQPage and Product schema, each leading with a direct answer and citing first-hand market data. We also earned mentions from two trade directories and a logistics publication.Within the first citation window, the pages began appearing as sourced answers when buyers asked specific questions like 'how to verify a Yiwu supplier' — the structured, factual format made them easy for AI to quote.OutcomeEarly AI citations appeared within roughly a month of the schema-and-content rollout, with visibility climbing as third-party mentions accumulated. Key Data: What the 2026 AEO Evidence ShowsMultiple 2026 AEO studies point the same direction: structure and third-party trust beat keyword tricks.6.5xMore likely to be cited by AI via third-party sourcesThan through your own site alone61%Of ChatGPT-cited pages had rich schema markupVs 25% of Google's top results3-4 wksFor early AI citations after schema + FAQ go liveSpreenge 2026 AEO study60-90 dTo build meaningful third-party visibilityMentions accumulate over timeFigures from 2026 AEO research (Spreenge; AirOps 15k-URL citation study via Rococo Digital).61% of ChatGPT-cited pages had rich schema; third-party sources win 6.5x. Common Mistakes That Keep You InvisibleThese are the errors that stop AI engines from citing a page.Hiding text in images If the answer is only in a graphic, the model cannot read or quote it.No schema markup Without FAQ/Product schema, the engine guesses at your structure.Thin or duplicated content Low-value pages are skipped in favor of authoritative sources.Blocking AI crawlers A robots.txt rule against search bots can make pages invisible to AI search. The mistake: hiding answers in images and blocking AI crawlers. Question 24

Agent fees are a commission (3-10% of goods value) plus fixed add-ons for inspection, consolidation and freight handling. Always ask for the line-item breakdown before you sign.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Most Agents Combine a Percentage of Product Value With Fixed Add-OnsDirect AnswerA China sourcing agent's fee is almost never a single number. The standard model is a commission (usually 3-10% of product value) plus separate fixed charges for services like inspection, consolidation and shipping coordination. Understanding the split is the only way to compare two quotes that look identical on the surface. The Two-Part Fee Model Almost Everyone UsesThe dominant structure in Yiwu and across Zhejiang is a percentage commission on the total product value, calculated on the factory price before freight and duty. On top of that sit fixed service fees that do not scale with order size.Commission Typically 3-10% of goods value; lower tiers (3-5%) usually apply above a monthly volume threshold.Fixed add-ons Inspection, consolidation, repacking, document handling and local courier are quoted per event, not per cent.Transparent agent fee quotes separate commission from fixed add-on services. What the Percentage Usually CoversThe commission is meant to pay for the work that actually protects you: supplier identification, price negotiation, sample management, production follow-up and quality coordination. A transparent agent itemises this so you can see what you are buying.ServiceUsually inside commission?NoteSupplier search & vettingYesCore value of the agentPrice negotiationYesOften the largest savingSample handlingOften yesMay be a small fixed feeProduction follow-upYesReduces late-shipment riskThird-party inspectionNoQuoted per man-dayInternational freightNoPassed through at cost The Fixed Add-Ons That Move the Real NumberTwo agents can quote the same 5% and still differ by hundreds of dollars once add-ons are in. The items below are legitimate, but you should see them on the quote, not discover them on the invoice.Consolidation & warehousePer shipment or per cubic metre when your goods come from multiple factories.Inspection coordinationA 3rd-party PSI runs $250-450; the agent may add a handling fee on top.International wire feeYour bank charges $20-50 per T/T; some agents pass this through.Repacking / labellingFor FBA or retail-ready goods, this is a real cost, not a scam.A line-item quote lets you compare agents on real all-in cost. Case: Two Quotes, One Looks CheaperImporter: EU home-decor buyer, $28k first orderAgent A quoted 4% with no add-ons listed. Agent B quoted 5% but itemised inspection ($199), consolidation ($120) and a $30 wire fee. A's 'cheaper' 4% hid the same services inside an opaque margin. We walked the buyer through both and she chose B for predictability.OutcomeB's all-in came to $1,579 vs A's opaque $1,540 plus surprise fees of ~$210. Predictability won. The 2026 Numbers That MatterCommission bands have held steady through 2026, but two forces push the effective rate: higher freight (which agents often mark up) and the de-minimis removal that now forces formal entry on every parcel.3-10%Commission bandOf goods value, Yiwu market norm$199Inspection / man-dayTradeAider flat rate, 2026$50-150Customs brokerPer formal entry, post de-minimis$20-50Wire transfer feePer T/T, passed throughCompare all-in cost, not headline commission, when choosing an agent. Red Flags in a Fee QuoteNo line-item breakdown If the agent refuses to separate commission from add-ons, assume the margin is hidden in freight.Commission on freight You should pay commission on goods, not on the shipping you could book yourself.'All-inclusive' with no scope Vague all-in pricing usually excludes inspection and customs, which appear later. How RND SOURCING QuotesOur desk quotes a single transparent commission on product value and lists every fixed service (inspection, consolidation, documentation, wire) as a separate line before you confirm. Question 25

Find the equivalent item on 1688, convert the RMB price and compare. A 10-30% gap is normal; anything wider suggests a trader layer you can negotiate away.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Find the Equivalent Item on 1688, Convert the RMB Price, and Quote the GapDirect AnswerLocate the same or an equivalent product on 1688, note the RMB wholesale price, convert it at the current rate and set it beside the Alibaba quote. The gap is typically 10-30% for identical goods, and a further trader layer can add around 20% more. That number is your negotiating position. Why the Benchmark WorksThe 1688 price is what Chinese wholesalers pay each other. It carries no export overhead, no English-language service and no escrow, so it is not a fair like-for-like target - but it is a reliable floor, and knowing the floor changes every conversation about price.1688 domestic pricethe floorFair Alibaba equivalent+10-30%Trader-layered quote+~20% morePadded quoteno justificationThe 1688 price is a reliable floor for judging an export quote. How to Find the Equivalent Item1Use image search rather than wordsUpload the Alibaba product photo into 1688's image search. How to Use the Number in a NegotiationThe benchmark is a tool for a specific conversation, not a weapon. Suppliers know 1688 exists, and a buyer who cites it accurately is treated as informed rather than aggressive.Cite the figure, not the accusationState the number you found and ask what accounts for the difference.Acknowledge the export layerSome gap is legitimate. Asking for a 1688 price on Alibaba signals inexperience.Ask for the gap to narrow, not vanishMeeting in the middle is the realistic outcome.Use it to test honestyHow a supplier answers matters as much as the price they land on.Do not send screenshots aggressivelyA confrontational approach usually ends the relationship rather than the markup.Image search beats keyword search when matching an item on 1688. Image search found the identical item on 1688 at RMB 16.80 at the 3,000-unit tier, roughly $2.35 - a 66% gap that no export overhead explains. Asked to account for it, the supplier moved to $3.35 and declined to discuss EXW, which told us what we needed to know.OutcomeThe order went to the 1688 manufacturer through our desk at $2.62 all-in including commission, a 33% saving on the negotiated Alibaba price.Cite the number and ask what explains the difference. The Benchmark's Blind SpotsEquivalent is not identical Visually similar products can differ in material grade, which is where cheap 1688 listings often hide.Export costs are real Packaging, documentation and export-grade QC are genuine costs a domestic listing does not carry.Domestic listings can be stale 1688 prices change frequently and some listings are not actively maintained.Very low prices are also a warning A figure far below the cluster usually signals a lower specification, not a bargain. How RND SOURCING BenchmarksWhen a client sends an Alibaba quote, we run image search on 1688, pull the matching quantity tier and check the material specification against the listing before treating the two as comparable. The client receives both numbers with the conversion date attached and our reading of what the gap means. Frequently the honest conclusion is that the Alibaba quote is fair and the client should stay put, which is a recommendation that earns us nothing but keeps the advice worth having.Benchmark a quote for meRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Question 26

Wrong product, weak photos, cost-based pricing, ignoring SEO, no email list, advertising before validation, and overstocking. Most failures happen within 120 days and nearly all are preventable.

Accepted Answer

Direct AnswerDirect AnswerNew stores die from a short, predictable list: the wrong product, poor product photos, cost-based (not value) pricing, ignoring SEO, no email list, advertising before validating demand, and overstocking. Most failures happen within the first 120 days, and nearly all are preventable with disciplined validation and a lean first order. RND SOURCING builds the first import around these checks so the store launches with a real product and cash to reorder. Detailed Explanation: The Seven KillersE-commerce failures are rarely mysterious. They cluster around the same avoidable errors, and they surface fast — usually inside the first few months when cash and attention are thinnest. Each mistake compounds the others: a weak photo lowers conversion, which forces more ad spend, which exposes a bad margin, which empties the bank before a reorder is possible. Caught early, every one of them is fixable.Wrong product No real demand or no differentiation — the root cause behind most closures.Poor product photos Low trust and low conversion; buyers cannot judge quality from a blurry image.Cost-based pricing Pricing from cost plus a markup ignores the value buyers perceive and crushes margin.Ignoring SEO No organic discovery means you pay for every single visit forever. No email list No owned audience to recycle into repeat purchases and recover abandoned carts.Ads before validation Pouring budget into an unproven offer just accelerates the loss.Overstocking Tying up cash in inventory you cannot move is the final blow. Most new stores fail within 120 days — and almost always for preventable reasons. Real-World Example: The Store That Nearly Died in 90 DaysCase study — RND SOURCING recovery, YiwuA new home-decor store launched with supplier photos, cost-plus pricing, and a $3,000 Meta budget — but no SEO and no email capture. Conversion sat at 0.6%, ad spend outran revenue, and a 1,000-unit first order tied up the remaining cash. By day 90 the owner was one reorder away from closing.RND SOURCING stepped in: we reshot the products in a Yiwu studio, rebuilt pricing around perceived value, stood up basic SEO and an email capture, and cut the next batch to 250 units matched to proven variants.OutcomeConversion tripled to 1.9%, the email list funded repeat orders, and the leaner reorder freed cash — the store passed day 120 and kept growing. Common Mistakes That CompoundThese are the traps RND SOURCING sees most in stores that do not make it past four months.Launching on supplier photos They signal a copycat and suppress the conversion a new brand needs.Pricing from cost alone Cost-plus ignores what the market will pay and quietly destroys margin.Betting the budget on ads pre-validation Paid traffic cannot fix an offer nobody wants.Filling the warehouse on hope Overstock is the most common path to a cash crisis at day 100.The mistakes: wrong product, weak photos, cost pricing, no SEO, no list, premature ads, overstock. Question 27

Know CAC, LTV, and cash-flow timing. If CAC approaches LTV or you run out of cash before reorder, the business fails even with sales. Healthy stores keep LTV:CAC above 3:1.

Accepted Answer

Direct AnswerDirect AnswerThree numbers decide survival: Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), Lifetime Value (LTV), and cash-flow timing. If CAC approaches LTV, you lose money on every buyer; if you run out of cash before the reorder arrives, you are insolvent even while selling. RND SOURCING models these before the first container so a first-time founder imports against a real, fundable plan. Detailed Explanation: The Three Numbers That Decide SurvivalCAC is what you spend to win one paying customer — ads, creative, tools, and a fair share of your time. LTV is what that customer is worth across all their orders, at your margin. Cash-flow timing is the calendar: you pay the factory and freight up front, then wait weeks for goods, then wait for customers to pay you back.Sales alone do not prove a business works. A store can post revenue and still be dying if each new customer costs nearly what they return, or if the money runs out before the next inventory cycle closes.CAC Total acquisition spend divided by new customers — include ads, tools, and labor, not just ad clicks.LTV Average order value times purchase frequency times lifespan, at gross margin.Cash-flow timing The gap between paying to import and getting paid by customers — the part that actually kills stores.Three numbers decide survival: CAC, LTV, and cash-flow timing. Real-World Example: Sales That Still Ran Out of CashCase study — RND SOURCING financial model, YiwuA first-time importer launched a home-storage line and sold steadily — but his CAC had crept to $62 while his modeled LTV was only $70, leaving almost no room for overhead. Worse, he had paid a full 40-foot container up front and had no cash left to reorder when stock ran low in week six.RND SOURCING rebuilt the model: we cut CAC by shifting spend toward organic and email, raised LTV with a bundle, and phased the first orders so cash recycled into the reorder. The second cycle needed no extra outside funds.OutcomeLTV:CAC moved from 1.1:1 to 3.4:1, and the replenishment cycle became self-funding within two import rounds. Below 1.5:1, fix the model before importing.4Map the cash calendarList when you pay the factory, freight, and when revenue returns. Find the lowest cash point.5Size the first order to that cash pointNever order so much that you cannot fund the reorder. Common Mistakes That Drain the BusinessThese are the errors RND SOURCING catches most often in first-time imports.Counting only ad-click CAC Ignoring tools and labor understates true cost and hides a failing ratio.Treating sales as profit Revenue with CAC near LTV is a loss dressed as success.Ignoring cash-flow timing Paying a container up front with no reorder cash is the classic insolvency trap.Over-ordering on early sales A good first week is not a proven annual run-rate.The mistake: sales that still run out of cash before the reorder. Question 28

If a supplier stops replying after deposit, first rule out Chinese New Year or another holiday (the Yiwu market closes for 2-3 weeks). If genuinely ghosted: escalate through your agent, open a Trade Assurance dispute if applicable, report to the platform, run a commercial credit check. The real fix is prevention - staged payments and pre-shipment inspection.

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: Rule Out Timing, Then Escalate FastDirect AnswerFirst rule out Chinese New Year (late Jan/Feb closes everything for 2-3 weeks). If genuinely ghosted: escalate through your agent, open a Trade Assurance dispute if applicable, report to the platform, and consider a commercial credit check. Prevention - staged payments and inspection - is the real fix. Why a Reply Pause Is Not Always a ScamChinese factories and trading companies operate on a calendar that is invisible from abroad. The Yiwu market closes for two to three weeks around Chinese New Year (late January or February depending on the lunar calendar). The National Day holiday in early October shuts the country for a week. Mid-autumn and dragon-boat festivals close individual factories for three days. Suppliers often go quiet during a festival without warning because the festival is a given, not an event they think to announce. So the first move when a supplier goes quiet is to rule out the calendar. The second move is to escalate fast, because once a supplier has crossed from 'festival pause' to 'we are not responding', the recovery window shrinks daily.A single red voicemail icon is not yet a scam. A pattern of them is. The Four-Step Recovery Process1Confirm the calendar.Check the date against the Chinese holiday calendar. If the silence coincides with Chinese New Year, National Day, Mid-Autumn or Dragon Boat, wait until the holiday ends and try again.2Escalate through your agent.A local agent has direct phone numbers, WeChat contacts and the social leverage to push for a response within hours. They also know which factories are in genuine trouble.3Open a Trade Assurance dispute if applicable. If the deposit was paid through Alibaba Trade Assurance, open a dispute immediately. Time matters - the dispute window is finite and the evidence requirements are strict.4Run a commercial credit check.Tianyancha, Qichacha and Sinosure produce commercial credit profiles that surface court judgments, dishonest-debtor listings and recent regulatory penalties. Useful for legal action and for warning other buyers. Why Staged Payment Prevents Most of ThisIf the deposit was 30% rather than 100%, the buyer's exposure is already limited to that 30%. If the deposit was 100%, the buyer's exposure is the entire order. The first time a buyer experiences a ghost-after-deposit, the lesson is rarely about the supplier. It is about the payment structure.A staged payment structure - 30/30/40 against inspection milestones - leaves the buyer with leverage until the very end of the order. Trade Assurance adds a refund mechanism. Together they cover most of the realistic ghost-after-deposit scenarios. An unanswered phone is the moment to escalate, not to wait. Case: The Supplier Who Was on Holiday for Two MonthsFrom the RND SOURCING desk, YiwuA buyer sent a 30% deposit to a small Yiwu trading company for a custom packaging run. Communication slowed after the deposit landed, then stopped. The buyer assumed the worst and called us.A two-minute check on the supplier's WeChat moments showed a string of holiday photos from Hainan. The factory had effectively closed for the eight weeks around Chinese New Year, a pattern common in smaller family-run businesses. We contacted the supplier on a personal mobile. The owner apologised - production had been scheduled to start the week we called. We visited the workshop, confirmed the tooling was in place, and ran a pre-production sample the same week. The bulk run started three weeks later than originally planned but arrived without issue.OutcomeThe supplier was not a scam. The buyer had assumed an English-speaking supplier's response cadence without checking the local calendar. The lesson on both sides: assume Chinese holidays will not be communicated unless asked. The Calendar That Runs Chinese ProductionPeriodImpact on communication and productionNotesChinese New Year (late Jan - mid Feb)Complete shutdown for 2-3 weeks, suppliers slow for 4-6 weeksLargest annual disruption; plan orders around itNational Day Golden Week (Oct 1-7)Full week shutdown, suppliers slow for 2 weeks around itSecond largest disruption of the yearMid-Autumn Festival (Sep or Oct)Three-day factory closure, common travel periodUsually announced a week in advanceDragon Boat Festival (May or Jun)Three-day factory closure, common travel periodSmaller impact than the other twoLocal factory summer break1-2 weeks, varies by factoryOften not announced unless askedTrade fair weeks (Canton Fair etc.)Suppliers attend in person, slower responsesUseful for in-person meetingsSmaller factories may take longer or shorter breaks than the calendar suggests. Ask your supplier directly.Empty corridors look the same whether the reason is a holiday or a scam. Only the calendar and the evidence can tell you which. What Evidence to Gather If You Suspect a ScamIf the silence has gone past a reasonable window and the calendar does not explain it, the next 72 hours matter. Gather evidence in the order a lawyer or platform arbitrator would want to see it.The order messages, with dates. The deposit receipt and bank reference. The Proforma Invoice signed by the supplier. Any production photos or videos the supplier sent. The supplier's licence image and the SAMR registry status as of today. Any written confirmation of the production schedule. Keep all of this in one folder, ideally exported in a portable format. How RND SOURCING Handles Ghost-After-Deposit CasesWe have seen this pattern enough times to have a default playbook. The first move is to call the supplier on a personal mobile rather than rely on WeChat or email. The second is to identify whether the silence is a holiday, a cash-flow problem or a deliberate cut-and-run. Question 29

Take the factory address from the business licence and look it up on Baidu Maps or Google Maps. A legitimate manufacturer sits in an industrial park. A residential apartment, virtual office or commercial tower is a stop signal. For larger orders, a physical visit by a Yiwu-based agent is the final confirmation.

Short Answer: Two Free Tools, Two MinutesDirect AnswerTake the address from the business licence and search it on Baidu Maps (best for China) or Google Maps. A real factory sits in an industrial park. A residential apartment, virtual office or commercial tower is a stop sign. Confirm the registered city matches the claimed production city, and have your agent visit in person for larger orders. Why an Address Check Catches What a Licence CannotThe national enterprise registry will confirm that an entity exists, that it is active and that its registered address is a string of Chinese characters. It will not tell you whether the address is an industrial park, an apartment or a serviced office. That is exactly the information that decides whether you are talking to a manufacturer or to someone with a mailbox. Two free tools, two minutes, decisive in most cases. Baidu Maps is the most accurate for Chinese addresses because it carries full Chinese street coverage and street view imagery. Google Maps is acceptable for non-Chinese-language searches and for international suppliers. The map satellite view is the first screen of any address check. The Two-Minute Address Verification1Pull the registered address from the business licence.Use the exact Chinese characters. Pinyin variants and rough translations will not match reliably on a map.2Search the address on Baidu Maps.Search by Chinese characters, not by English. Look at the satellite view and the street view if available. Look for industrial-park buildings, factory rooftops and loading bays.3Check the registered city matches the claimed production city.A 'factory in Dongguan' registered in Shenzhen is a yellow flag. Cities ten kilometres apart in the same industrial cluster are not a problem. Cities in different provinces are.4Look for the company name on the building. On Baidu street view, factories often have their name painted on the gate or above the reception. An unmarked building in an industrial park is informative. A marked building in a residential tower is decisive.5Cross-check the surrounding area.If the immediate area is full of similar factories, you are in an industrial cluster. If it is full of apartment buildings and convenience stores, you are not.6If the order is large, send a local visitor.A Yiwu-based agent can be at the address in a few hours for Zhejiang and the Yangtze River Delta. The visit is the final signal. What Real and Fake Factory Addresses Look Like on a MapIndustrial park with the company name on the gate. The single most reassuring signal. Look for a guardhouse, loading docks and a parking area big enough for trucks.Multi-storey factory building with rooftop ventilation.Factories have rooftop ventilation and air-handling equipment that offices and apartments do not.Visible loading bays or forklift paths.A loading bay at street level is the strongest single feature of a manufacturing address.Apartment building or residential tower.Factories do not operate out of residential addresses. Walk away without further discussion.Serviced office or co-working space.A serviced office can be a registered address for any kind of entity. It is not evidence of a manufacturing operation.Address too vague to map.An address with no street number, no building name and no district mapping cleanly is a problem in itself.Pin the address. Then read what surrounds it. Case: The Address That Looked Right Until the Map OpenedFrom the RND SOURCING desk, YiwuA buyer was sourcing a small injection-moulded consumer item and asked us to verify a Shenzhen-listed supplier. The licence was clean, the SAMR registry was active, the supplier had been on Alibaba for six years with a Verified Supplier badge. We pulled the registered address and opened Baidu Maps. The pin landed in the middle of a residential compound in Bao'an district. Surrounding buildings were apartment towers. Street view showed a convenience store on the ground floor, a kindergarten two doors down and no industrial feature anywhere on the block. We telephoned the registered legal representative. The number rang through to voicemail at a personal mobile. We sent a Yiwu-based colleague to the address the next morning. The building did have a small office on the seventh floor, but the office had no factory, no machines and no goods.OutcomeThe buyer avoided a 100% upfront order with the supplier. The supplier had been operating as a trading company from a residential apartment for at least six years. The Verified Supplier badge referred to a different business address that the supplier had since vacated. What If the Map Shows the Right Area but Not the Right Building?Industrial parks in China often host dozens of similar-looking buildings. The pin on the map may land on the park but not on the specific building. That is the moment to ask the supplier for a video walk from the building entrance to the workshop floor, naming the building and the floor number. A real factory does this without hesitation. If the supplier refuses or sends a pre-recorded clip, the address check has done its job - it surfaced the question that would otherwise have been hidden. An industrial park you can see from the air is the address you want. When a Physical Visit Is Worth the TimeFor orders above roughly $10,000, an in-person visit is the final confirmation. A Yiwu-based agent can reach most of the Yangtze River Delta industrial cluster within a few hours by car or high-speed rail. The cost of the visit is trivial compared to the cost of the order. The visit produces evidence that no remote check can match: the workshop floor, the workers, the tool room, the QC bench, the company name on the gate. For orders below $10,000, a video walk combined with a pre-production sample usually gives enough signal. The address check still matters - it is the cheapest way to remove the obviously fake factories from the candidate list. How RND SOURCING Verifies Factory AddressesEvery new factory in our network goes through the Baidu Maps cross-check before any sample is ordered. For relationships we have not visited in the past twelve months, we either re-visit or run a fresh video walk from the building entrance to the workshop floor. The address is the cheapest piece of the verification stack and it rules out the most expensive class of supplier problems. For buyers placing larger orders, we arrange a Yiwu-based colleague to visit the address in person, with photographs of the gate, the workshop and the QC bench as standard. We are honest about the limit. A visit confirms the factory today. It does not confirm the factory tomorrow. Repeat the visit on a meaningful cadence. If a supplier objects to a video walk or a physical visit, the objection is the data we need.Send us a supplier address for a free map cross-checkRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. Question 30

Made-in-China has fewer suppliers than Alibaba but a more industrial mix and a higher share of genuine factories. Use it as a cross-check, not a replacement.

Short Answer: Not Better - Different, and Most Useful as a Cross-CheckDirect AnswerMade-in-China.com has a smaller supplier base than Alibaba but a more industrial, business-to-business tilt, and buyers consistently report a higher proportion of genuine manufacturers. Pricing sits at a similar export level. Its real value is as a second source to triangulate against Alibaba rather than a replacement for it. Where Each Platform SitsThinking in terms of a single best platform is the wrong frame. Each indexes a different slice of the same manufacturing base, and no one of them holds all of it.PlatformCharacterPrice levelBest useAlibaba.comLargest base, consumer-goods heavy, export-facingExport levelDiscovery and first ordersMade-in-China.comSmaller, industrial and B2B tiltSimilar to AlibabaCross-checking and industrial goods1688.comDomestic, factory-level, Chinese only10-30% below AlibabaPrice benchmarking and scaled buyingGlobal SourcesCurated, electronics and hardware strengthExport levelElectronics sourcingMade-in-China skews industrial where Alibaba skews consumer goods. Why the Factory Ratio DiffersThe composition of a marketplace follows who it was built to serve. Alibaba's scale and consumer focus attract a large trading-company layer, whereas a smaller industrial platform has less room for resellers of low-value goods.Fewer low-value consumer trinketsThe catalogue skews towards machinery, components and industrial supply.A higher share of genuine manufacturersConsistently reported by buyers, though not independently audited.A smaller total supplier baseYou will find fewer options per search term.A less polished interfaceSearch and filtering are noticeably clunkier. The Triangulation MethodSerious buyers do not pick a platform; they run the same product across three and compare what comes back. The overlaps are where the real makers usually sit.1Search the product on AlibabaBuild the initial shortlist using the strongest search experience.2Search the same product on Made-in-ChinaLook for companies appearing on both, which is a positive signal.3Benchmark on 1688Find the domestic price and, often, the actual producer behind both listings.4Compare company names, not productsThe same entity under slightly different trading names is common.5Verify the overlap on GSXTOne licence lookup settles which entity actually manufactures.Overlaps between platforms usually point at the real manufacturer. What Triangulation RevealsRunning the same search across platforms surfaces information that no single listing will tell you, and it costs nothing but an hour.Who is reselling whomAn Alibaba 'factory' whose product appears cheaper on 1688 under another name. The real price floorThree independent quotes make a padded one obvious.Genuine capabilityA company listed on industrial platforms usually has industrial capacity.Negotiating leverageA concrete alternative changes what a supplier is willing to hold. Case: The Same Factory, Three PricesBuyer: Swedish tool importer, mid-volume hand toolsSearching a hand-tool line across all three platforms returned what looked like three unrelated suppliers. Two shared a registered address on GSXT and the third was the manufacturer both were reselling. Quotes ranged from $4.85 to $6.40 for the identical item.OutcomeBuying at the source removed 24% from the unit price and shortened lead time by nine days.Industrial platforms tend to index genuine production capacity. Limitations Worth KnowingA smaller base means gaps For fast-moving consumer goods, Made-in-China often simply has no listing.Badges have the same weakness Membership tiers on any platform still prove payment rather than capability.Prices are still export level Do not expect a 1688-style gap; the saving comes from finding the right supplier.English quality varies Industrial suppliers often have weaker export-facing communication. How RND SOURCING Sources Across PlatformsWe run every client brief across Alibaba, Made-in-China and 1688 before recommending anyone, because the overlaps tell us more than any single listing does. Where the same product appears under different company names we check the registered addresses and licences on GSXT to establish which entity actually produces. For anything within reach of Yiwu we then go and look. We have no commercial relationship with any of these platforms, so the shortlist is built on what the checks return rather than on where we earn.Get a cross-platform supplier shortlistRND SOURCING — Yiwu, Zhejiang, China.
